Destructive Interference

Destructive Interference is a competitive bidding game designed to be incorporated into science curricula on wave behavior.

The game models the concept of destructive interference by setting waves against one another in pitched “battles.” Players interact with the waves by playing "medium cards" (like copper, water, and vacuum) for the waves to pass through. In order to successfully manipulate and determine the winner of each wave battle, players must either learn or remember how different media affect particular wave types.

Goals and outcomes:

  • Introduces examples and properties of three types of waves (surface, transverse, and longitudinal)

  • Models how different media impact wave strength

  • Facilitates an understanding of basic statistics through competitive bidding mechanics
