Project Stormfury
Take on the role of disaster management specialists in Project Stormfury, an educational board game that simulates an incoming hurricane.
During gameplay, players are in charge of preparing a fictional coastline for a storm, and work to build levies, sandbags, and other forms of preparation in order to minimize the damage done to their city. Meanwhile, the hurricane’s movement is randomized by a deck of movement cards, requiring players to apply statistical thinking to predict which part of the coastline the hurricane will hit. Project Stormfury is designed to be played as an introductory activity to JASON’s Monster Storms curriculum materials.
Goals and outcomes:
Cooperative group gameplay emphasizes basic statistical weather prediction
Rewards strategic planning and preparedness rather than after-the-fact action
A challenging activity that commands student attention and demands active participation
