Race to Restore

Race to Restore is an area-control game that pits players against one another in a race to rehabilitate a damaged ecosystem.

The board is comprised of a grid of tiles that start the game in a damaged state. Players build infrastructure to utilize and redirect the marsh's natural resources of water, fauna, and ground sediment from healthy, stable marshland to its damaged neighbors. When players send enough healthy resources of the right types to the damaged land, they flip the tile and gain control of the land, giving them points, more resources to work with, and access to tiles further in. The most successful players will learn how the different resources to one another and the marshland, allowing them to plan better and flank their opponents.

Race to Restore is meant to accompany science curricula about wetland ecosystems and wetland restoration.

Goals and outcomes:

  • Provides a basic introduction to wetland restoration and how developers must utilize external and intrinsic resources to restore an ecosystem

  • Models a basic ecosystem with resources that relate to one another differently

  • Promotes problem solving as players make use of limited resources to progress through the marsh
